Prolonged heat and humidity create ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed, driving dengue and other vector-borne illnesses. Flooding, meanwhile, increases exposure to waterborne and digestive diseases. Together, these climate-sensitive risks underline the urgent need for early warning and response systems to protect public health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A research team at OUCRU Vietnam, led by\u00e2\u20ac\u00af<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/jennifer-van-nuil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associate Professor Jennifer Ilo Van Nuil\u00e2\u20ac\u00af<\/a>and\u00e2\u20ac\u00af<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/marc-choisy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Marc Choisy,<\/a> has been conducting in-depth qualitative research to examine how advanced warning and response (AW&amp;R) systems can be strengthened to address dengue and other climate-sensitive infectious diseases. The study identifies barriers and facilitators for integrating early warning tools, such as OUCRU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/project\/dengue-advanced-readiness-tools-dart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dengue Advanced Readiness Tools (DART)<\/a>, into existing surveillance systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This research is part of the \u00e2\u20ac\u00af<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/project\/aware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advance Warning and Response Exemplars (AWARE) project<\/a>, a three-year global initiative (2023\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2025) led by <a href=\"https:\/\/pandemics.sph.brown.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brown University\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pandemic Centre<\/a> and funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gates Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/about\/committed-grants\/2020\/02\/inv004664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gates Ventures<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wellcome<\/a>. Participants, around 30 representatives from the Department of Health, the Centres for Disease Control in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, and leading hospitals, also discussed opportunities to improve outbreak prediction and rapid response.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As infectious diseases grow increasingly complex in the face of climate change, participants agreed that Vietnam has both the\u00e2\u20ac\u00afopportunity and responsibility\u00e2\u20ac\u00afto lead by example in advancing early warning and response systems, offering lessons with global relevance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/guy-thwaites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof\u00e2\u20ac\u00afGuy Thwaites<\/a>, Director of OUCRU, underlined the importance of building on Vietnam\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strong disease surveillance system:<em> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Many emerging infectious diseases in Vietnam are first detected<\/em><em> here<\/em><em> at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City. Bringing together expertise and data from across the country<\/em><em>, we can move from strong surveillance to even stronger outbreak prediction<\/em><em>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/people\/jennifer-van-nuil\/\">Assoc Prof Jennifer Van Nuil<\/a>, Principal Investigator at OUCRU, emphasised Vietnam\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s international recognition:\u00e2\u20ac\u00af<em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have spent the past year exploring the strengths and challenges of Vietnam\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response systems. Through AWARE, Vietnam is being recognised globally as a model for outbreak preparedness, thanks to the collaborative work of OUCRU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s social science, mathematical modeling, and dengue research teams, alongside our partners at HTD. This research is not only about understanding barriers, but also about identifying what works and scaling it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Global significance<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/pandemics.sph.brown.edu\/our-work\/aware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWARE project<\/a> was inspired by the\u00e2\u20ac\u00afCOVID-19 response <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exemplars.health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exemplars in Global Health<\/a> programme, which underscored the importance of rapid detection and coordinated responses. By examining \u00e2\u20ac\u0153positive outliers\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in low- and middle-income countries, AWARE aims to identify best practices and core capacities that enable effective AW&amp;R systems.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Vietnam, the project focuses on\u00e2\u20ac\u00afdengue prevention and control, a pressing challenge as climate change drives more frequent and severe outbreaks.
