{"id":4723,"date":"2018-01-09T14:42:22","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T07:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/?p=4723"},"modified":"2023-01-14T10:11:59","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T03:11:59","slug":"dong-thap-students-show-agricultural-antibiotic-reduction-starts-with-commitment-to-good-farming-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.oucru.org\/index.php\/2018\/01\/09\/dong-thap-students-show-agricultural-antibiotic-reduction-starts-with-commitment-to-good-farming-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Dong Thap students show agricultural antibiotic reduction starts with commitment to good farming practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reducing antibiotic usage in poultry production starts with a commitment to good farming practices \u00e2\u20ac\u201c show students participating in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Stop Your Poultry from Bingeing on Antibiotics,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a contest organized in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap from late 2017-early 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Only when a farmer is fully devoted to his\/her chickens will he\/she feel urged to apply good farming practices for the sake of preventing bacterial infections, of reducing the need to treat his flocks with antibiotics,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Tran Thanh Nam, 17.<\/p>\n<p>Nam is among the 123 students from Thanh Binh 1 and Chau Thanh 1 high schools to have proposed novel ways to communicate about antibiotic abuse in Vietnam &#8211; through photos, paintings and short essays.<\/p>\n<p>In his artwork <em>To Produce Truly Awesome Chickens, <\/em>Nguyen Le Duy Thanh, 18, depicts how a farm is run like an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153antibiotic binge-drinking party,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d where chickens big and small alike get drunk on antibiotics and yet the owner still markets his chicken products as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153clean.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4726\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Image-2-for-press-release.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4726 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Image-2-for-press-release.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Let Me Tell You, Darling by Tran Le Huynh Thu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another aspiring artist, Tran Le Huynh Thu, names her painting <em>Let Me Tell You, Darling, <\/em>in which a couple is discussing how to reduce antibiotic usage through such good farming practices as choosing strong chicken breeds and planning the right vaccinations. Ms. Thu, 18, believes that for any antibiotic reduction measure to work, farming couples should discuss more with each other, although sharing farming experience is uncommon among husbands and wives in rural Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oucru.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/English_Top-10-entries-from-\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Stop-Your-Poultry-from-Bingeing-on-Antibiotics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d-contest.pdf\">English_Top 10 entries from \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Stop Your Poultry from Bingeing on Antibiotics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d contest<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Together the contest participants brought antibiotic abuse into the perspective of complex societal relations. And they did that, not without a sense of humor.<\/p>\n<p>With 10 prizes, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Stop Your Poultry from Bingeing on Antibiotics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d will have its award ceremonies in Thanh Binh and Chau Thanh districts on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> and 9<sup>th<\/sup> January respectively.<\/p>\n<p>It is organized by the Ho Chi Minh City-based Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, in collaboration with the Dong Thap Center for Health Information and Education, and the Provincial Department of Education and Training.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Stop Your Poultry from Bingeing on Antibiotics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is a community-engagement activity under ViParc, a research project aiming to help farmers in the Mekong Delta raise healthy chickens with lesser amounts of antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>The ViParc project is conducted against the backdrop of widespread antibiotic overuse and misuse in Vietnam\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s farming sector, which is believed to be a major driver of antibiotic resistance. Such resistance refers to the ability of bacteria to avoid the mechanism of action of antibiotics, resulting in failure in the treatment of bacterial infections in both animals and humans.<\/p>\n<p>ViParc researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/viparc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/17.pdf\">recently confirmed the presence of colistin-resistant non-typhoidal <em>Salmonella <\/em><\/a>in pork purchased from a wet market in Ho Chi Minh City.
